Salt Lake City · Legal under Utah HB 340
Plug-in solar panels for Salt Lake City homes.
Four solar panels that plug straight into an outdoor outlet. Cut your power bill with no roof drilling, no electrician, and no utility approval.
Panels only. A complete plug-in setup with microinverters is about $1,050.
How plug-in solar works
Three steps. One afternoon.
Plug-in solar feeds power straight into your home's wiring. Your appliances use the sun first, so you buy less power from Rocky Mountain Power.
Set out your panels
Backyard, deck, carport, balcony, or roof. Anywhere with good sun. Simple ground mounts tilt them toward the sky.
~30 minConnect a microinverter
Snap the panel cables into a UL-listed microinverter. It turns the sun's DC power into normal household AC power.
~10 minPlug into an outdoor outlet
That's it. Your home starts using solar power right away, and your bill starts going down.
~1 minPlug-in solar vs. rooftop solar
Solar without the $20,000 contract.
Rooftop solar means loans, permits, contractors, and months of waiting. Plug-in solar means buying panels and plugging them in.
- Sales pitch, contracts, and financing
- Permits, inspections, and utility paperwork
- Months before it turns on
- Holes drilled in your roof
- Stays with the house when you move
- Not an option for most renters
- Buy once. No salesperson, no loan
- No permits, electrician, or utility approval
- Making power the day you set it up
- Nothing drilled, nothing permanent
- Unplug it and take it when you move
- Works for renters and homeowners
Pays for itself in about 3 to 4 years, then keeps saving for the 25+ year life of the panels.
Pricing
Simple, honest pricing.
Brand-new 400W panels, made in America by Imperial Star in Texas. $95 each, or $90 each when you buy 4 or more.

1 panel
- Add to an existing setup
- RVs, sheds, cabins, off-grid
- 25-year power warranty

4 or more panels
- The right amount to max out Utah's 1,200W limit
- Pays for itself in about 3.5 years with 2 microinverters
- Take it with you when you move
Why 4 panels?
Utah's HB 340 lets you plug in up to 1,200W. Panels rarely hit their sticker rating, though. Heat, haze, and sun angle mean real output is closer to 75% of the label.
Three panels fall short. Four get you right to the limit, so you get the most savings the law allows. Set each microinverter to 600W in its app so you never go over.
Your total cost & savings
Everything you need for about $1,057.
Other Utah plug-in solar sellers charge $1,200 or more for a 3-panel kit. Here's the full cost of a 4-panel setup, including the parts I don't sell. Move the sliders to see your payback.

*Estimate assumes about 1,200W of real-world output and that your home uses all the power the panels make. Plug-in solar is not net-metered, so power sent back to the grid is not credited. Microinverter and accessory prices are set by those sellers and may change. Some links are affiliate links.

FAQ
Plug-in solar questions
Is plug-in solar legal in Utah?
Yes. Utah's HB 340, passed in 2025, allows plug-in solar systems up to 1,200W to connect to a standard outdoor outlet. There's no interconnection application and no utility fee, as long as the equipment meets NEC and UL standards.
Do I need an electrician, a permit, or Rocky Mountain Power approval?
No. For systems up to 1,200W you don't need any of those. You just need a smart meter, and Rocky Mountain Power swaps older meters for free.
Is it safe to plug solar panels into my house?
Yes, when it's set up right. Use a UL-listed microinverter, which shuts off automatically if the grid goes down. Plug into a weather-resistant GFCI outdoor outlet on a 15A or larger circuit. A dedicated circuit is best. If the circuit is shared, add up everything else plugged into it (space heaters, hair dryers, microwaves, and vacuums are the big ones) and keep that total under the breaker's rating. With solar feeding the circuit, the breaker can't protect you from overloading it. My setup guide walks through it.
How much will plug-in solar save me?
About $300 a year for a typical Salt Lake backyard setup. That's roughly 2,400 kWh a year at 12.5¢ per kWh. The essentials pay for themselves in about 3.5 years, or about 4.5 years if you add mounts and cables.
Do I get paid for extra power?
No. Plug-in solar isn't net-metered, so you only save on power your home uses while the panels are producing. The average Utah home uses about 20 kWh a day, so most homes use everything the panels make.
Where can I get the panels?
Pickup is free from my garage in South Salt Lake. You'll get the exact address after checkout. Delivery is $50 within about 20 miles, which covers most of the Salt Lake Valley. Enter your address at checkout to confirm.
Can renters use plug-in solar?
Yes. Nothing is installed permanently. Set the panels on ground mounts, plug in, and take everything with you when you move.
